Residencies to create new or expand on existing work for young audiences (gr. K-7) for both emerging and established performing artists in music, dance, or theatre.

In this residency, established performing artists will create new or expand on existing work for young audiences (gr. K-7 or 8-12). Each artist will have multiple opportunities to showcase work in progress in our small stage theatre and receive feedback from invited young audiences and a cohort of industry professionals. Possibilities of public premiere of completed work (with performance fees) will be assessed following the residency.
Fees: Established artist(s) will receive $8,000 CAD for the residency and development of new work for young audiences.
Timeline of activities:

- Friday, June 9, 2023: Deadline to submit proposals
- Late August-December: Creative development of projections including showcasing of work-in-progress, workshops, outreach and mentorship with developed cohort of industry professionals.

(Residency to be completed by June 30, 2023)
In this residency, emerging performing artists will create new or expand on existing work for young audiences (gr. K-7). Each artist will also showcase this work (or work in progress) alongside an invited established professional BC artist in a public showcase for young audiences and invited industry professionals in June 2023 in our small stage theatre.
The emerging artists will receive mentorship from the invited artist as well as our team of professional artistic advisors.
Fees: Emerging artist(s) will receive $3,000 CAD for the residency and showcase performance.
Timeline of activities:
- Friday, May 12, 2023: Deadline to submit proposals
- May 15-June 15, 2023: Begin creative development of projects including workshopping and mentoring with Artistic Associates
- June: Showcases and outreach to take place in the small stage performance studio at Eighth & Eight Creative Spaces
In addition to fees paid, both residencies will receive:
- Studio space to develop and rehearse projects (minimum two weeks for emerging artists)
- Access to digital and theatrical equipment as well as tech support and basic training on the equipment (if needed).
- Technical and front of house staff for any public showings of work in progress/performances
- Promotional and administrative support
- Mentorship from one, or more, of our Artistic Associates
The Massey Theatre employs a team of Artistic Associates, each responsible for reflecting and advocating distinct yet intersectional programming and engagement lenses in service of relationships with seniors, LQBTQ2+ people, black community members, Indigenous people, and the immigrant diaspora residing in our community.

Please submit a one-page description of your proposed project. Please indicate which residency you are applying for and include your bio and any other pertinent information, including links to video reels, social media, resumes, and any questions. Please include a detailed timeline that corresponds to our timeline above.
Emerging artists should also propose ideas for established artists they are interested in connecting with for mentorship and the shared showcase.
All projects must also include some community engagement. Please detail all resources you can bring to the project to ensure a successful community engagement plan is achievable. Examples of community engagement might include an open studio, public artist talks, or digital engagement.
